John Haldean Stafford, 79, formerly of 117 Southern High School Road, Graham NC, passed away May 27, 2010 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of declining health and one week of critical illness.

 

A native of Alamance County, Mr. Stafford was the son of the late Carl and Julia Lindley Stafford, and the husband of the late Peggy Crutchfield Stafford.  He attended Eli Whitney School, and was president of the graduating class of 1949. 

 

Mr. Stafford served in active combat during the Korean Conflict as a master sergeant in the 999th Armored Field Artillery Battalion, X Corps, U.S. Army.  Following service, he joined Huffman Oil Company, where he worked for over 40 years.

 

Mr. Stafford was a former member of Center United Methodist Church, and an active member and former trustee and chairman of the administrative board of Salem United Methodist Church.  He was a former member of the Tarheel Triad Good Sam Camping Club and a past member of the Mountain View Ruritan Club.  An avid musician, he played music every Friday night at with his friends at Charlie’s Place as long as his health permitted.

 

He is survived by his son, Ken Stafford and wife Rev. Canessa Stafford, of Burlington; daughter, Becky Stafford of Cary; brothers Everette Stafford and wife Leona and Kermit Stafford and wife Elizabeth “Boots” and sister Margaret Stafford Thompson and husband Sabert, all of Graham; grandchildren Amanda Stafford of Burlington and Christopher Henderson and wife Leath of Charlotte, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, and his special friend and caregiver, Ruby Hamilton.

 

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jesse Stafford and Marvin Stafford, and one sister, Ethel Stafford Hancock.

 

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 30, 2010 at Salem United Methodist Church, 4471 Salem Church Road, Haw River, NC 27258, with Rev. Kathy Hoyle officiating.

 

Visitation will be held Saturday, May 29 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home, located at 207 E. Elm Street, Graham, NC 27253

 

At other times the family will be at the home Margaret and. Sabert Thompson of 5252 South NC 87, Graham, NC  27253.
